What are we in Power For?

By: Dennis Valdes

The Last Column. Hard to believe but this is it. My last "What are we in Power For?" column.

I have written these so religiously on Sunday nights that it will be hard to find a substitute activity for those evenings. Just imagine, there I am on Sunday night, lying in bed with my laptop, typing away whilst watching TV. What other activity could I possibly start doing instead? I shall have to ask Tessa for suggestions!

The Softball Game

Last week the Outgoings or the Already Cames beat the Incomings by a score of 26-20. Let me write about the game, as it was illustrative of the kind of fellowship and camaraderie that has made our club so strong.

The players ranged from old members to baby Rotarians and potential Rotarians. Foremost among the Outgoings was George Juico, who came early and dressed in new shoes and all. Or perhaps they just looked new and were actually unused?

Also among the Outgoings was PP Coch, who left the game looking like Brad Pitt. Unfortunately not in one of his more dashing roles but more the Brad Pitt from The Fight Club.

Also among the Injured were Incoming Team members Sec. Al, who bruised his calf sliding into second, and Dir. Eugene, who caught a ball using his head and got knocked woozy.

But by and large the evening was quite successful. The game was quite thrilling as, in typical RCMA style, we made the rules up as we went along.

First off, we shortened the game to 4 innings, then we had the "maximum ten run rule" and finally, PE Paul and I had run-in of sorts when he waived the "maximum ten" rule on the last inning but I superceded him with a final Presidential veto. Those vetoes will be sorely missed in the future, but then PE Paul will carry the excitement and thrill of wielding that presidential power for one year.

10th Leg of the President’s Cup

Friday is the final leg of our long-running battle for glory on the fairways. At press time the plans are Manila Golf & Country Club, tee times starting at noon. I’m sure our relentless Sports Chairman Dindo L will give the final update at today’s breakfast meeting. I really have much to thank Dindo for. The series has been excellent and I’m only sorry that I didn’t do better and win at least one leg. But then again, I still have Manila Golf on Friday, don’t I?

Schedule

I’d just like to remind everyone once again that we will have no more breakfast meetings at the Fairways Dining Room of Manila Golf this June. Next week, instead of our regular meeting, we are having our Sports Night & Turnover. Unfortunately, venue has not yet been decided, but everyone will be informed, no worries! Just reserve the date: Friday, 8PM onwards, June 23, 2000.

Finally, for the 44th and final time, let me just tell you all: enjoy your breakfast this morning!
