Kuro-kuro Ko Lamang
By: Rtn. Chuck Montecillo

I was watching the news today, local news at that. I don’t usually watch local TV shows, but I couldn’t change the channel when I began watching. It was so amazing to see all the horror that’s going on in our country! Sure, I’ve heard about all the terrible things happening, like the 2 month hostage crisis in Mindanao, but, to see so many other "war like" images on the screen was truly horrifying!

I don’t really like watching the news on TV because I have this belief that what you see is ONLY there to get more ratings and nothing more. Information transfer is only secondary. I may not be accurate about that; it’s what I believe anyway. We are after all, a very commercial world.

What’s happening to our country? Is the "Filipino" way of life finally catching up to us? As Filipinos, we have a tendency to say, "pwede na yan", that’ll do or that’s good enough. Well, all those "pwede na’s" have stacked up to a truly "hindi talaga pwede!" (Nope, not gonna do it!).

Our tolerance of corruption and unsavory activities just has to stop if we, as a country, will ever grow. And I don’t mean grow economically, but also morally. We just don’t do the right thing anymore! Things are sold by deceit (AKA marketed), the poor are taken for all they are worth (and sometimes beyond, AKA slavery) and just keep on looking for new and innovative ways to take, take, and take.

Even the way we drive, is a very graphical example of how we do things. A small opening presents itself, and we just lunge forward, with our 2500 lbs. vehicle, without even considering if there’s really anything gained by that action! If traffic begins to slow down, drivers just cross over in to oncoming traffic, taking any and all available road. What comes of this type of behavior? Well, the one thing we try to avoid, traffic. What amazes me more than anything is that even after all the years that this has been going on, no one seems have learned from the experience! How is this possible?

Corruption isn’t new. This happens all over the world. People know that politicians lie so they can make lots of money while in office. We know this. Yet, we tolerate it. Why? Is it true that anyone who wants to serve the country really has to steal from its citizens? I guess so. Otherwise, why do we always put in to power those who steal from the very country they are sworn to serve?

All this tolerance for the wrong thing has brought on all the havoc the country is going through. That’s what I think. It was bound to happen. Wait, it always happens! What will we do about it? Like before, nothing at all. Sure, some people will start organizations and investigative teams. Press releases will "uncover" all the wrong doings of those unscrupulous people. But, in the end, what do we do? The same thing all over again.

As a child at heart, things like this confuse me. I asked all those questions before and got the same answers. The "adult" answers. I still don’t like what I’m hearing or seeing. I guess that’s why I refuse to grow up. I’m just not ready for this kind of world.

Maybe Barney should be in office and sing his song… "I love you, you love me…." Things might just get better. Until then, I’ll just have to go back to hearing the news second hand from friends and relatives. It’s less upsetting that way.

Good morning and so long (last column) RCMA!
