What Are We in Power
For?
By
Dennis O. Valdés
I would call it the Y2K bug that never bit. What is
"it?" Grammarians, led by Sec. Alvin, shout back. Why, RCMA attendance in the
first meeting of January, of course!
Old members will know that the first meeting of the year, following a long vacation, is
always a low attendance meeting. Back before the millennium bug was news, this was
referred to as the "January effect." The conventional wisdom was that to
maximize attendance, there had to be as few days off between meetings as possible. To put
it another way, regularity was the answer, and I'm not referring to bowel movements there!
Well, the Y2K has come and gone and proven the old adage wrong, because
we had a truly successful first meeting. Notable attendees included PP Sammy Tanchoco, who
will be rejoining us as a Senior Active Member, Sports Chairman Dindo Litonjua, proving
that he is Y2K Compliant, and even a delegation from RVC Rizal came to present us with a
New Year gift.
The RVC delegation brought along Post Dated Checks totaling the P20,000
plus interest that they borrowed from RCMA Foundation last year to start their Coca-Cola
Dealership Project. The dealership is doing very well and the RVC is most thankful to RCMA
for helping them start it up.
Speaking of PP Sammy, he will be the 19th addition to our membership
roster this Rotary Year. I don't want to use the term "Induction," because we
are not inducting him again. PP Sammy had resigned from the club a couple of years ago,
having reached the grand age of 76! After participating and leading our 6th Medical
Mission in Bgy. Calabuso, Tagaytay, and attending our Christmas Party last December, he
was encouraged to rejoin us. Many thanks to Sec. Alvin for convincing PP Sammy to keep on
giving!!!
As I noted in the previous issue of Pagkakaisa, I have to apologize to
all because I will be leaving tonight for Paris, for a long-delayed buying expedition with
Tessa to furnish our house. From there, we move to New York to attend a wedding on the
22nd. If all goes according to plan, we will be back on January 30.
As also noted, this does mean that I will miss 2 RCMA meetings, the RGFFP Golf Tournament
in Baguio and the District 3830 Mid Year Review, although I'm certain PE Paul Chuatico
will adequately cover RCMA during my absence.
Before I end, I would like to personally offer my condolences to Rtn.
Girish Pande, whose father passed away over the holidays, and to Dir. Romy Paguyo, whose
son, Michael, also passed away just before the Millennium.
As for the rest, enjoy those breakfasts whilst I'm gone - see you all
in February!
