Kuro-kuro Ko Lamang

by: Rtn. Chuck Montecillo

Well, the Philippines has been in the international news quite a bit lately. Unfortunately, the news hasn’t been very flattering. I guess hi-jacking and spreading viruses through email doesn’t get favorable attention.

On the plus side, the suspected "hacker" isn’t Filipino. This person just happened to be in the country when he/she (the authorities aren’t sure about this point yet) decided to create the malicious program that has been clogging email servers all over the world.

So, what does this say about our beloved country? Well, I think, it just shows that we are no different from any other country on this planet. We haven’t learned our lesson yet.

Today’s world is getting more and more complicated. Computers are being used to "simplify" our lives, but the implementation is a horrendously complex process. Technology is changing at a rate that most people cannot comprehend or even deal with.

Deviant behavior is more rampant than ever before, mainly due to the fact that there are more people around. But, because of the technology, it is easier to hide this behavior. And to make things worse, there are new "creative" crimes in existence. Virus writing is one of them. The technology we created to make life easier and simpler has spawned more pitfalls and new unforeseen problems to deal with. Life just got more complicated.

It’s kind of like being born. Everything is new. We must learn how things work, try everything for the first time. After awhile, we’ll figure it out.

Today’s world is one that is in transition. The "old" world is gone. It is but a memory stored electronically in a hard drive somewhere. A new age is upon us and we’re experiencing the growing pains. But, if we are lucky and we don’t forget where we came from, we should be all right. The environment will bounce back, crime and corruption will lessen and the animal life will not only survive, but flourish.

Here’s the catch, we must LEARN from our mistakes. Those hi-jackers and that hacker in the news haven’t learned. They are still making mistakes. Lucky for us, we have the chance to learn from them.

The technologies that have come to life came about because we learned what works and what doesn’t work. Every new lesson brings us to a new level. If only we could learn how to live in this world without killing each other and every other living thing in it, life would be so much better.

Let’s not make the lives of those who died in that conflict go to waste. Lessons have been taught, and it’s up to us to make use of the information.

Good morning RCMA.
