If
you were supposed to...
be with us last week.
by: Rtn. Chuck MontecilloWell, unfortunately, the article
for this section didn't make it in time
for printing. Since my mind was like mush
at the time (due to trying to finish last
weeks issue... to no avail), I have
almost no recollection as to what events
transpired.
I do remember our guest speaker, Paing
Hechanova. He spoke about the history of
RCMA. It was very eye opening, especially
when he brought up the fact that our
Charter date was Dec. 5 and not Dec. 7,
as it is written on our medallions! Oops!
He was eloquently introduced by PP
Arsenic Laurel. I wasn't aware of it at
the time, but aparently, Arsenic was
coached by Past RI Director Paing
Hechanova.
I think I missed the wake up call and
fine session due to the a last minute
effort to get photo copies of last week's
issue. It was a good thing, too. I heard
RCMA'ers that weren't wearing their
Rotary Club pins were fined. Does this
mean I have to cough up the money since I
did show up WITHOUT my pin?
I do remember an announcement that Dir.
Carey de Venecia was officially engaged
to be married. Congratulations!
As for what else happend, well, just ask
the other RCMA'ers that were present.
Everything else is just a rush of images
in my mind.

What Are We in Power
For?
By
Dennis O. Valdés
I'm in Hong Kong as I write
this, so it will be short! I don't want
to interrupt my shopping:)
Attended a meeting with our sister club,
RC Tsuen Wan, last Friday, Aug. 27. PP
Herbert Poon was there, eager to plan a
visit to us this November. PP Nelson Chow
wanted to gtreet his good friends, T.R.,
Vince and Mike. International Service
Ricky Ng talked about a trip to China we
can plan in November to present the
Helping Grant # 83 proceeds to the
hearing impaired children. Obviously, we
have a fruitful sister club
relationaship.
The best part of the meeting was a
District 3450 Inter City Meeting, to hear
RI Director Richard King talk about
Membership Development. RID Dick is the
best- no exagerration- the best Rotary
Speaker I have ever listened to. And I
have heard a few, believe me! RID Dick
told me he is scheduled to visit us in
May as he is speaking at our Discon. I
will tell you all right now we shuld make
sure that this is one Discon we don't
miss.
One thing nice about HK Rotary is that no
one talks during the speaker's time. All
attention is on the speech. Part of the
way this is achieved is that the speech
is held before the dinner. The scheduling
encourages the speaker to keep it short
(he has not eaten either), and the
listeners are quiet- probably from
hunger! But the overall effect is a
well-delivered and listened to speech.
Gov. Guiller should consider this for the
coming visit of RID Bill Boyd.
A minor digression, also at the HK Inter
City Meeting, was Steve de Krey, who was
director of Admissions when I applied to
the Kellog School in 1987. Steve, now
with HK University of Science &
Technology and is my
"classmate" as he is President
of RC Kowloon.
Rotary in HK is alive and well. Among the
facts divulged by RID Dick King:
1. The first 100% PHF club IN THE WORLD
is RC Kowloon East in RY 1998-1999.
2. Rotary is now in 200 countries, which
makes it more international than the UN
or any other organization known to man.
And now, a word of thanks to Sec. Alvin,
IPP Miguel, PP T.R. and all the others
who so ably represented RCMA at the
graduation of the Teacher Trainors at
Phase 2 of In Step FEST. We now move the
program to Phase 3, whcich is where the
Trainors pass on their learnings to their
colleagues. I understand Sec. Alvin rang
the opening bell. Did he look
presidential, I wonder?
All for now. There's a sale to catch at
Seibu.
