What Are We in Power
For?
By
Dennis O. Valdés
Alay Lakad die-hards were supremely
disappointed Saturday evening, as the
event was postponed for this Sunday, 19
September 1999. Poor PP Bobby Chang only
learned of the postponement at midnight,
a scant four hours before he was due to
leave for the CCP. Over 14 of us were
sure to be there, which is important for
two reasons:
1. We would have set an all-time high for
RCMA attendance at Alay Lakad.
2. I would have lost a bet with Sec.
Alvin because my forecast was 12 RCMA'ers
or less. The bet: $100 for SPHF.
Meanwhile, we had a complete group at the
non-event on Sunday morning anyway. Our
Rotaract Club and delegations from RVC
Pembo and RVC Rizal were there in
full-force, headed by Baby Rotarian JP
Reyes, who curiously did not get any text
message regarding the cancellation.
(Better get us your Globe #, JP.)
Due to the Alay Lakad move, we have to
reschedule our September club events. The
new dates are as follows:
Sep. 17 RCMA BOD Meeting no change
Sep. 19 Alay Lakad
Sep. 26 Medical Mission #3 no change
Oct. 2 President's Cup at Luisita change
Oct. 3 Dual Meet with RC Angeles Centro
change
Last Wednesday, I was asked to talk at
our Rotaract seminar, "Breaking the
Chain of Physical and Mental
Corruption." From the title, you can
all tell it was an event that many in our
club should have attended. Ha, ha. Baby
Rotarians George Lagos and RJ Ledesma did
make it and I understand RJ writes about
my scintillating talk somewhere in this
issue.
Cigar Night 4 was a hit last Thursday,
although after four consecutive stellar
events, Rtn. Tony Y should be so used to
this by now. Seventeen members arrived as
well as two potential new members. We're
already looking forward to Cigar Night 5!
Yesterday, Tuesday, I had a meeting with
Ayala Foundation, Inc. regarding the RVC
Development Program which they are
proposing to us. We also met with
delegates from RVC Rizal last week, at
which we discussed their Coca-Cola
Dealership Project. With seed capital of
P60,000, the RVC can become the Coca-Cola
Dealer for their barangay, enabling them
to earn more money for themselves. The
capital was contributed as follows:
1. P10,000 from the RVC members
themselves
2. P30,000 from Ayala Foundation, Inc.
3. P20,000 loan from RCMA Foundation
Today is a very unusual meeting for all
of us. This is the first time I have ever
attended an RCMA meeting at noon. But as
Gov. Guiller has asked all clubs to do
more joint projects, here we are gladly
joining hands with our mother club, RC
Makati, in a joint meeting to welcome RI
Director Bill Boyd. We're looking forward
to it.
Normally, I end this column with the
admonition, "enjoy your
breakfast!" This time, I'll end it
differently: "be quiet and listen to
the speaker!"
