What Are We in Power For?

Good morning! There's a part of me that's still hung over from our Induction last July 16, 1999. (Or is it hung over from Luther's stag party last Saturday?) Quite a few members, Presidents of other clubs and District Officers have let me know what a great time they had (at the Induction, not at Luther's). Governor Guiller Tumangan wrote me a short note to let me know how much he appreciated our unique program (again, at the Induction, not at Heart Beat).

This past week has been busy also, with our 1st Dental Mission held at the Stepping-Stone Learning Center on July 23rd. One of the best parts of the Mission is that so many Baby Rotarians supported it. Congratulations to Community Service Director Dong 1 for leading the group! (And of course, IPP Miguel for showing the way!)

On the same day, we participated in the Awarding Ceremony for Partners and Supporters for a Polio-Free Philippines, where PDG Oskie de Venecia gave us a Certificate of Appreciation. (Read more about it in Club Sec. Alvin's article.) Key point: the Philippines will be declared polio-free by March 2000. As PDG Oskie put it in his talk, this is Rotary's gift to the children of the next millennium.

But that is all past, so I'd rather devote this week's column to upcoming events. There are so many! Samples for the rest of July and August:

1. July 31 - District Rotaract/Interact Assembly & Conference at Pamantasan ng Makati. Our Rotaract Club's Past President, Percival Estillero, is the District Rotaract Representative. In effect, he's the equivalent of DG Guiller for the Rotaractors. I'll be asking Youth Service Director Jake Uichico to lead a delegation to support Percy.
2. August 1 - Maybe our 2nd Medical Mission already! Details to follow if it will push through.
3. August 6 - 1st President's Cup at The Country Club. Sports Chairman Dindo Litonjua and PP Arsenic Laurel are ready! Watch out and cry when you receive your new handicaps. (Please keep the date flexible, as Chairman Dindo's wife, Ailene, is due any day.)
4. August 7 - District Membership Development Seminar. The District is trying to ensure that Baby Rotarians and prospective members are properly introduced to Rotary. Gov. Guiller has asked our 6 new Rotarians to come and attend.
5. August 9 - 1st Governor's Cup at Riviera. Another golf tournament ?!? Why not! The more the merrier. Sports Guru Dindo is again planning to send a team of 4. This is known as "investment golfing" because these clubs will also support our upcoming 4th Paul Harris Cup.
6. August 12 - RC Makati West's Guest Speaker is new CB Governor Paeng Buenaventura. They've invited us (hakot?) to attend and we are going to 50% subsidize the lunch fees of RCMA'ers that attend.
7. August 21 - International Service & Vocational Service Seminar. Directors Cary Rufino and Carey de Venecia, respectively, will be very interested in learning more about their avenues of service. Costs c/o RCMA, of course.
8. August 25 - Our Guest Speaker is PRID Paing Hechanova. Paing is one of the godfathers of our club - so devoted to us that he even dropped by our Induction for a couple of hours, despite the conflict with his home club's Induction that same evening. Let's make sure we get 100% attendance for his talk.

Our Guest Speaker this morning is Twinkie Lao, who will tell us more about Private Banking, also known as "how to open a Swiss bank account," a topic that ex-President Marcos was an expert at. Let's try not to be our usual irreverent selves, so as not to shock our guest.
