What Are We in Power For?
By
Dennis O. Valdés
Good morning! Today, we welcome twelve visitors from
our sister club, RC Tsuen Wan. This morning we will formally sign our sister club
agreement for the year, cementing a relationship that, like a great wine, continues to
improve every year.
We are both working on our first joint project, Helping Grant #83, which will provide
Hearing Aids for Children in China. This is the first Helping Grant approved for China and
the first involving a Philippine Rotary Club. Sometime next year, we expect RC Tsuen Wan
to invite us to go with them to China to see more about the project. I'm already excited
to get there.
Of course, being the hospitable Filipinos we are, we have to properly
entertain our HK guests. Tuesday night featured a grand dinner at our favorite Chinese
restaurant, Wah Yuen, followed by enthusiastic karaoke singing at the Furama KTV in the
Binondo area. I do hope our Anns will understand our staying out late two nights in a row.
After all, RC Tsuen Wan only visits once a year and we want to make sure they have an
excellent time during their 3 days here.
Tonight, we are treating our guests to Filipino food. A prospective
member owns a new and hip Filipino eatery called Katip in, of course, Katipunan Avenue. So
despite the distance, we are making the effort to all troop down to QC and sample the
Filipino food there.
Last Sunday was our Medical Mission 5 - that's our 5th in the 5 months of RY 1999-2000.
MM5 was another joint mission with RC Makati Guadalupe and RC Makati Northwest. Some of
you may recall that MM2 was a joint mission with RCMG also. In that mission, we provided
doctors, nurses, medicines and manpower. RCMG provided food and the banner.
Thanks to Dir. Dong A.S., I like to think that they also learned how we administer these
missions with a minimum of effort and a maximum of organizational efficiency. Well, last
Sunday, RCMG showed that they did indeed learn a lot from us. This time, they provided
doctors, nurses and all logistics. All we provided were the medicines.
The following day, Monday, VP PKC held the 1st Organizational Meeting
for the 4th Paul Harris Cup, hereafter to be known as 4PHC. PK splurged on the meeting,
booking the Top of the Citi for all of us to enjoy the view and the food. I sure hope that
all of us heartily support Paul, because the PHC's are our club's only fund raising
activity for the year.
Before I end my short article, let me just encourage everyone to check
the Events Calendar in the back of Pagkakaisa. We all know that December is a very busy
month, so last week the BOD met to plan the rest of 1999 for RCMA. We've calendared every
event for you to mark in your date books, including our Christmas Party, Cigar Night 5 and
our traditional gift giving meeting at Stepping-Stone Learning Center.
The most important event to remember is next week's meeting, at which
we will have our RCMA Election for the President and Directors for RY 2001-2002. As per
our usual tradition, IPP Miguel will be acting as Comelec Chairman. This is a very
important meeting, at which we will need your attendance in order to attain the required
quorum - so PLEASE ATTEND!!! Who will be the President Nominee? Everyone is already
excited. Listen to the "bulong" and you will know who the man will be...
We can all start the speculation right now. This way, we will all have
a bit of spice to enjoy our breakfasts! |
