What Are We in Power
For?
By
Dennis O. Valdés
Boy, is my face red. Those of you who
read my column in last week's Pagkakaisa
must feel that if this were a newspaper,
you could rightly accuse it of spreading
lies and disinformation. My credibility
is sinking. But at least no one can
accuse me of sedition! (Against myself?)
Anyway, here's the juice: Alay Lakad is
re-scheduled to November 14, 1999. Final
na. As Bro. Mike would say: Tiyak yan.
And to PP Bobby Chang: Don't worry, we'll
be there!
One short note on contributions to Paul
Harris Fellowships. The RI exchange rate
goes from P38 to P40+ on October 1, so
contribute before then and save! A list
of the club's PHFs is included in this
week's issue.
Last week, we had a great joint meeting
with our "mother," RC Makati. I
was very impressed that we had at least
as many members there as RC Makati, even
though on paper they have 175 members to
our 52. Kudos again to Baby Rotarians
Jaco Yupangco and J.P. Reyes, who
continued their recruitment efforts by
bringing guests to the meeting.
Last Friday, we had our 3rd RCMA BOD
meeting. We discussed our accomplishments
through August and September and our
plans for October, including our 4th
Medical Mission in Bgy Magalang in
Pampanga and our club's Governor's Visit,
scheduled for October 20th. We also
decided to endorse DG Ernie Salas for
District Governor of our District 3830 in
RY 2000-2001, a decision that must be
ratified by the club as a whole this
morning.
Then over the weekend, we had an
excellent northern Luzon Golf Tour,
comprised of Presidents' Cup 2 at Luisita
on Saturday and then Presidents' Cup 3 /
Dual Meet with RC Angeles Centro at
Mimosa on Sunday. Congrats to Sports
Director and Butcher Dindo L., Dir.
Eugene Go and Sec. Alvin Co for a truly
well planned weekend. Next week, we'll
have a full article with colored pictures
for Pagkakaisa. The color spread will be
a new improvement by Editor Chuck
Montecillo to our outstanding magazine.
Congratulations to PP Tony Laurel, who
scored his first ever Hole in One during
the Presidents' Cup 3 at Mimosa.
Tomorrow, Club Service Director and
budding entrepreneur Eugene Go is
inviting all of us to attend the opening
of his latest venture, Tequila Joe's at
El Pueblo in Ortigas. Let's all attend to
give him the member support that we are
becoming famous for.
This weekend, we have our 3rd Medical
Mission scheduled at Bgy. Pembo in
Makati. Our RVC is taking the lead role
in organizing the patients and our
doctors from Mary Johnston in Tondo will
be supporting us once again. We are still
trying to pin down a date when we can
schedule an Appreciation Dinner for all
the doctors and nurses that have assisted
us in the past. Watch this space for
further announcements.
I won't be able to attend the Med Mission
because I will be on another business
trip to Hong Kong. As always, I will try
to squeeze in a visit to RC Tsuen Wan so
that we can keep that relationship
strong.
We welcome today Capt. Ben Hur Gomez, our
guest speaker. Captain Ben is one of the
most energetic people I have ever met and
thanks to our equally energetic Rtn. Tony
Yap, he will talk to us today about a
typical day in his life. All I will say
is be ready to say to yourself: "And
I thought I was busy!"
It is good to be back on home turf, good
ol' Manila Golf. I know our breakfast
tastes better than the lunch we had last
week. Enjoy your breakfast!
