President's Cup at Luisita

The group met at the Manila Golf parking lot last Saturday at around 7:00
a.m. Unlike our regular Wednesday meetings, people came not in their
usual coats and ties but in their most colorful and comfortable golf
outfits. Unlike our regular morning meetings also, everybody was on time
(even Spencer was early!).

It was a day of excitement and anxiety for the golfers. For some, it was
the excitement of playing a new course, Luisita and/or Mimosa. For
others, it was the anxiety of a tough round in Luisita, infamous for having
the most number of water hazards. For a few, it was the excitement (or
was it fear?) of the impending match against the rotary club of
Pampangga---a club known to have quite a number of low-handicappers armed
with nothing less than bladed irons and brand-new balata balls. For most,
it was just the anxiety of whether the warm and sunny Saturday weather
would hold up (after playing water golf the past weeks, a dry round of golf
was every golfer's only wish for Christmas).

After having fooled both the caddies and the parking lot guards that there
was a tournament that day at Manila Golf, the players snuck out one by one
to the waiting bus outside the gates of the club (on the pretense that they
were just going to urinate outside). As the last player road the bus,
the group excitedly left burying the thought that their car tires would be
flattened by the club members come Sunday afternoon.

After a short tour guide of Manila on the way to Tarlac, the "butcher"
reminded the players of the itinerary, the formats of both the Saturday and
Sunday tournaments, and the all-important fees for the trip. The "Star
Fleet Commander", on the other hand, initiated the groupings for the
ever-present "friendly" bets for the next 2 days. Although I was honored
to have been pitted against the likes of the dindo, arsenic, and JP to lead
the groupings for the bets, I was just as dishonored with the likes of
Alvin who solemnly prayed not to be chosen for my group (this turned out to
be the cause of the bad karma that plagued him the whole day!).

The sun was seething as we got to Luisita. What was foremost then in the
minds of some of the players, including me, was how we were going to last
without golf cars under the scorching heat. Unfortunately, our prayers
were answered. About 45 minutes after the first flight teed off,
Hurricane Harry teed off with us --- leaving a trail of plugged balls,
150-yrad drives, muddy 10-pound shoes, and extremely body-fit and
see-through clothing (Eugene was so at home!). The 6-inch rainfall
packing up to 150 kilometer center winds left 2 casualties --- JP, out of
frustration, left after 2 and a half holes; and Luther, having used up all
his supply of underwear until Sunday, left for Manila after his round. It
was indeed a frustrating round again (lately, it does not surprise me
anymore). But as I always say, to golf addicts like us "water golf is
better than no golf" (except perhaps for the occasional "pusoy dos" or
"acquire"!).

After clogging the showers with the mud off of the players legs and faces,
we left for Mimosa with one thing in mind---the outdoor barbecue dinner to
be sponsored by Tony Yap. The sumptuous meal, the extremely cool weather,
and Tony's warmest welcome were all we needed to forget the haunting round
of golf at Luisita.

Finally, the day was capped with a relaxing drink with the sponsoring
rotary club of Pampangga at the "Tycoon", bar and restaurant by day,
karaoke by night. In no time at all, members of the RCMA and the
Pamapangga based rotary club developed an instant bond of friendship (which
was just as quickly broken after hearing some of our RCMAers sing). It
was indeed a long and hard day, but nevertheless a needed break for
everyone. To the organizers, Tony Yap, and the rotary club of Pampangga,
thank you for making our lousy round of golf a bearable one!
