What Are We in Power
For?
By
Dennis O. Valdés
Last Wednesday night was the launch of
Discon 2000 at the Caelum, which is on
37th Floor of the new Urban Bank
Building. The word comes from Latin,
pronounced Che'-Lum, meaning sky or
heaven, and it is truly an appropriate
name. The place is spectacular, offering
a 360-degree view of Manila. PP Miguel
and PP Bobby C. were with me at the
launch.
"Why a launch for a Discon that's
months away?" you may be asking.
Well, as always, Gov. Guiller is
planning, planning and planning. He wants
to have a Discon to end all Discons. A
Discon that every Rotarian will enjoy and
will hold up as a standard for years to
come. So an early launch is necessary to
get all of us to start thinking of the
event.
As part of our annual Rotary dues, the
club will pay for any RCMA'ers who want
to attend the Discon. Traditionally we
have only been forced to pay for 10 or
less, due to the fact that most Rotarians
find the event a waste of time. This
year, Gov. Guiller is making sure that
the event will NOT be a waste of your
time. Excellent speakers are being
gathered, and we are sure that any
RCMA'ers who make it there will feel good
about attending. If interested, fill out
the form in Pagkakaisa today and fax it
to me.
Thursday last week was the grand opening
of Dir. Eugene Go's new entrepreneurial
venture, Tequila Joe's. Attendees from
the club included PE PKC, Treas. Bobby R
& Ann Chatty, Sec. Alvin, Baby
Rotarian RJ and others. The place was
crammed so full that I'm sure several who
were there were not seen at all. So FL
Tessa, PP Miguel, PP Coch, Titos and I
snuck off to Strumm's where we could
actually sit and sip a beer while ogling
the likes of Amanda Page and other
guests. So tomorrow night I hope to
finally set foot inside Tequila Joe's
during the Q1 birthday bash. I hope to
see all of us and our Ann's there.
I was in Hong Kong over the weekend,
hoping to meet Pres. Raymond Leung of RC
Tsuen Wan and formally sign our sister
club agreement. Unfortunately, he was not
in as it was the Mid Autumn Lantern
Festival and so many Hongkee's were on
vacation. It was also Typhoon Signal No.
8, so I cut short the trip and left early
Sunday back for Manila. Sounds terrible,
but apparently the typhoon signals go all
the way to 10. So on 8, the wind was
strong but there was hardly any rain.
I did not get back in time, but I am
informed that Medical Mission 3 was a
huge success - 210 medical patients and
30 dental patients, thanks to the
organizational prowess of Dir. Dong 1.
Thanks too to PP Arsenic, Mohan K, Girish
P, PP T.R. and all the members who
committed to go and actually did! Special
thanks to George J and Ann Cynthia, who
led the medical and dental teams.
Today's Pagkakaisa has a new look and I
have to thank Editor Chuck for bringing
us to a new high with Pagkakaisa: color
pictures! We hope you enjoy this issue
and we will continue to bring you color,
perhaps monthly only due to cost
constraints, but enough to make a really
colorful issue every now and then!
Lastly, I hope we will all listen
carefully to Jojo Querubin, our guest
speaker this morning. Jojo is also my
classmate, being President of RC Makati
West, one of the greatest clubs in the
District. As the home club of Gov.
Guiller, Jojo has a lot of work cut out
this year - he is hosting the Discon, for
one. I have asked him to speak to us
extensively about what we can expect
during the event. Enjoy your breakfast!
