What Are We in Power
For?
By
Dennis O. Valdés
Today is Ann's Day! As I write this I am
wondering whether to greet my lovely wife
Tessa a "Good morning" or to
apologize on her behalf for not being
able to be here with all the rest of the
Anns because she is still asleep. I will
make a fearless forecast: "Good
morning, honey!"
Last week was a very quiet Rotary week -
not much to report really. The only
activity was that PP Miguel, PP Coch and
I attended a meeting for the National
Living Treasures Committee last Monday. I
know you've all forgotten, but what we
are trying to do is set up a foundation
to increase the public awareness for
these National Artists. These Filipinos
have dedicated their lives to traditional
arts and they need to be recognized for
this. Otherwise, in the near future, we
will all forget what the traditional
Filipino arts are like.
Susan Calo Medina, our guest speaker
today, is the host of Travel Time. She
will talk to us about exotic vacations. I
can remember when Boracay was an exotic
vacation, but now it has become
mainstream. She works with the Gawad ng
Manlilikha ng Bayan Committee, which is
how we met. Susan is also helping us set
up the National Living Treasures
Foundation. In her job with Travel Time,
Susan has been all over the world. So
today, we're gonna hear about really
exotic vacations.
Next week is our Governor's Visit. Please
make sure to come and show the Governor
what a wonderful attendance we have. I
understand that Dir. Jun Ymson may be
planning the Induction of the 3rd Batch
of Baby Rotarians that day. Let's see how
he does.
October is always a fun month, because of
Halloween. On October 22, First Lady
Tessa is planning a club Halloween Party
at our partially built house in Forbes
(right near Manila Golf!). I hope my
prediction is correct and that she is
here to tell us all the details, because
as usual, I don't know a thing. Working
with her is Dir. Eugene Go, who is
working very hard on earning his title of
"BCSBDTHYTAARM." (In case you
did not read this column last week, that
stands for "Best Club Service B
Director That Has Yet To Attend A Regular
Meeting.")
Completing our October schedule are two
events: Medical Mission 4 on October 24
and President's Cup 4 on October 29. As
already announced, MM4 will be our
largest mission to date, in the depressed
Barangay Magalang in Pampanga. The event
will be co-hosted by our sister club, RC
Angeles Centro. I encourage everyone to
make this an occasion for us to bring our
families to a Medical Mission, so we can
show our children how the less fortunate
Filipinos live.
Following MM4 will be a lunch at the
largest paper mill in the Philippines,
TIPCO. A short Plant Tour will follow
after lunch just before we all take the
bus home. We are expecting 20 Rotaractors
to join us during the day's events, along
with our usual bevy of doctors and
dentists.
Of course, the 4th leg of the President's
Cup needs no explanation, other than to
say - The Country Club, c/o Baby Rotarian
Rico Tan and Sports Chairman Dindo
"The Butcher" Litonjua. I'm
sure we will be well advised of more
details as the event draws near. That
same evening, reserve dinner because PP
Tony Laurel has already announced his
blowout for scoring his first ace and
winning P Cup 3 in Mimosa.
Enjoy your breakfast!
